Ford Bronco DR is a 400-HP Limited Edition Baja Racer

Fans of the Ford Bronco have been asking when the new-gen SUV will be getting a V8 engine option. Recently, Ford answered that question, partially, with the 2023 Ford Bronco DR. This vehicle is a fully-prepped desert racing truck that is not street legal but is a V8-powered Bronco. The DR in its name means Desert Racer and is developed for the 2022 SCORE Baja 1000 off-road endurance race. The DR spec Ford Bronco is a ready-race car.

Powering the 2023 Bronco DR is a naturally aspirated Coyote 5.0-liter V8 producing over 400-hp. It uses the 10R80 transmission and transfer case from an F-150 pickup truck to its V8 power through a set of front and rear electronic locking differentials with 4:70 gearing. Moreover, the Bronco DR body panels are fiberglass, and the front bumper is a tubular metal frame with a single-piece grille. The Ford Bronco DR also does not have glass in its windows or air conditioning to save weight.

The Bronco DR travels on 37-inch BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 tires wrapped around 17-inch Beadlock wheels to handle high-speed off-road driving. As a result, Ford claims the Bronco DR has over 50 percent more suspension travel over the production model.

With all these modifications, the Ford Bronco DR is not street legal. Ford announced that only 50 examples of the Baja-ready Bronco DR would be built. Each vehicle features a special racing livery, and pricing is estimated at a quarter of a million dollars. Racing, as they say, is anything but cheap. Protecting a race car's paint and livery is more than just a visual appeal. A race car’s bodywork is often real estate for sponsors.
