New 2021 Ferrari SF90 Spider is a 200 MPH Hybrid Convertible

There is a new horse in the Maranello stable, and while it is a thoroughbred, this prancing horse is a new breed of Ferrari. The 2021 Ferrari SF90 Spider is the first hybrid convertible for the famed Italian sports car manufacturer. This new topless supercar is an example of keeping up with the times as Ferrari starts to embrace hybrid technology to create faster, stronger, better cars without adding cylinders. Those loyal to traditional V12 engines and gated manual shifters may feel like they’re living in a Bob Dylan lyric, but that tune may change once they read the performance specs on the Ferrari SF90 Spider.

The SF90 Spider shares a lot of its components with the SF90 Stradale coupe. It uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine producing 796 horsepower. The hybrid technology comes in the form of three electric motors that add another 217 hp for 986 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. Controlling all that power is an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission sending it to all four wheels through an all-wheel-drive system. Two electric motors are placed in the front of the car and the third in the rear.

Performance numbers read in the SF90 Spider going from zero to 60 in 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 211 mph, with the top down! The Spider’s retractable hardtop can be raised and lowered in less than 15 seconds. For that Formula 1 feel, the steering wheel features touch-sensitive controls to operate functions like turn signals, windshield wipers, and headlights. Anyone driving this Ferrari up to 200 mph will be able to see their speed via a 16-inch digital gauge display.

The car won’t go on sale until late 2021, but Ferrari mentioned some of the options available for the SF90 Spider that’ll add to its starting price of $558,000. A handling package named Assetto Fiorando offers a unique livery with Multi-Matic spool-valve dampers, with carbon fiber accents and rolling on a set of Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. This convertible Ferrari isn’t just a stylish sports car but one of the most powerful vehicles in the lineup, and it’s a hybrid. The SF90 Spider is a new direction for Ferrari. While other manufacturers are busy shifting toward 100 percent electric, Ferrari recently stated that it does not plan to go full electric. This is a positive note for car enthusiasts who want to hear the sound of an angry engine in their half-million-dollar supercar. Electric supercars are capable of neck-breaking speeds, but they cannot beat the satisfaction of listening to eight or twelve cylinders shouting to the heavens in an open-top convertible on a Sunday morning drive.

A brand new convertible Ferrari with nearly 1,000 prancing horses on tap sounds like driving nirvana until a passing 18-wheeler flicks a jagged rock straight on to its Rossa Corsa Red paint.
