2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing is a 668 hp Farewell Tribute to the V8
Published On March 11, 2021
The latest unveil from Cadillac has been a bittersweet moment in the automotive world. The 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing debuted, highlighting a supercharged V8, manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive with a set of four doors. The automotive community was taken back by the wave of nostalgia seeing a powerful V8 built for enthusiasts rather than a target market. The CT5-V Blackwing, and its equally impressive smaller sibling, the 2022 CT4-V Blackwing, are sedans built for comfort – at speed.
Starting with the CT5-V Blackwing, its hand-built 6.2-liter supercharged V8 producing 668 horsepower and 659 lb.-ft of torque. It is the most powerful Cadillac ever made. Official numbers have not been confirmed, but Cadillac promises the CT5-V Blackwing can hit zero to 60 in 3.7 seconds and deliver a top speed over 200mph. With a starting price of $85k, the CT5-V is noticeably more affordable than the BMW M5 and more powerful than the M3.
The 2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing features a 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that brings 472 hp and 445 lb.-ft of torque to the party. The CT4-V can also hit zero to 60 in under four seconds. It has a starting price under $60k, putting it wheel to wheel with the BMW M3 – at a lower price.
The CT5-V and CT4-V Blackwing come standard with a six-speed Tremec TR6060 transmission used in the Chevrolet Camaro. An electronically limited-slip rear differential is tasked with sending all this power to the road using Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Stopping power arrives hard and fast thanks to a set of Brembo disc brakes. A 10-speed automatic transmission is available as an option, but who cares when you can have a supercharged V8, four-door sedan with three pedals.
Cadillac went through both vehicles to enhance their structural stability. The 2022 CT5-V and CT4-V Blackwing can handle as well as it runs. Purpose-built to be a track day car comfortable enough to drive every day. Cadillac will offer a carbon-ceramic rotor as an option, which saves 53 pounds of weight. There was also a mention of a carbon fiber aero package.
Cadillac opened online reservations for the first 250 Blackwing editions CT5-V and CT4-V and sold out the same afternoon. Anyone who arrived late at the party had to settle for a waiting list. Not to worry, Cadillac will be building more Blackwing sedans before shutting the hood on gasoline vehicles for good. The V lineup will not end, but its next evolution will be electric. Cadillac will now use the Blackwing name to represent the top-of-the-line performance badge for Cadillac.
