This 1965 Shelby 427 Cobra FAM was Built to Troll Ferrari

Back in the Y2K era, Shelby America produced 14 CSX1000 series continuation 1965 Shelby Cobra cars under the direct approval of Carroll Shelby. Among these 14 Cobras, two were christened with a special edition badge, bespoke options, and one purposeful acronym – FAM. These letters represented the phrase, "Ferrari's Ass is Mine," and was a direct nostalgic jab at Shelby's triumph over Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the 1960s. These two cars became known as the FAM Shelby Cobras, and as fast as they are, what they are really built to do is troll fans of the prancing horse from Maranello, Italy.

The 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 FAM wears a familiar shade of red called Rossa Corsa, otherwise known as Ferrari red, with a tan leather interior. Original 427 Shelby Cobras from the 1960s can fetch price tags with several commas at auction, but an unused Shelby Cobra FAM is expected to reach state lottery numbers. At least, that's what the current owner and Mecum auto auctions are hoping for when this car rolls across the auction block in March 2021.

Besides being a unique vehicle with a tie to automotive history, approved by a motorsport legend, this Shelby Cobra FAM has one more special item on its resume. The car's previous owner was the late Paul Walker from the Fast n Furious franchise. Walker purchased the car as a roller sometime in the early 2000s, and after his tragic accident, the estate sold the car to the current owner, who immediately shoehorned a numbers-matching aluminum fuel-injected 427 big-block V8.

The engine is stroked to 468 to produce 550 horsepower to shift a vehicle weighing less than 2,300 pounds. Channeling all that power to the rear wheels is a Tremec five-speed manual transmission. This Cobra can deliver a fatal bite in the hands of a careless driver. It's no surprise the current mileage of the car, according to Mecum, is less than 20 miles.

This is an ultra-rare sports car tied to a Hollywood celebrity and a unique story in automotive history, a triple threat that auction houses dream of selling. It will get its chance at Mecum Glendale, which starts on March 18-20. The next owner of this troll-mobile will surely want to protect its flawless Ferrari red paint job from any would-be Instagram opportunist looking to lean on the car for a photo opt.
