The Mercedes-Benz G-Series has a very unique and recognizable skeleton, that hasn’t changed since it’s birth. Back in the seventies, a Shah from Iran mentioned to Mercedes that he would like a 4×4 SUV. Instantly, Mercedes partnered with Austrian military vehicle manufacturer, Steyr,Daimler-Puch, and created the Gelandewagen. German for cross-country vehicle. R&D for this vehicle was extensive, with many trips to the Sahara desert, the Arctic Circle, and German Coalfields. It was 1979 that they started hand building the G-Wagen at their Graz factory, where they’re still made to this day.
They had two versions available in 1979, a short or long wheelbase. Two-door ragtop, wagon, and windowless wagon versions were available. They came with a ladder chassis, three fully locking differentials, and six engine options. Three gasoline engines, and three diesel variants.
The Gelandewagen has seen action serving over 60 armies, and Mercedes has even had to promise NATO that they’ll continue building them until 2025. To respond to the Range Rover, Mercedes had to class up the G-Wagen and make it a luxury SUV, and not just a terrain destroying military people carrier. Refinements over the next decade included, air conditioning, comfier seats, electric windows, power antenna, ABS, wood trim, and much more.
People were starting to notice how the G-Wagen hadn’t changed in decades, so Mercedes stepped it up once again and handed the vehicle over to the wizards at AMG. To this day you can get one with a 6.0L twin-turbo V12 that makes 612 hp and 737lb ft of torque! So how does a car that’s basically been unchanged for 33 years last? In the words of Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson, “MORE POWER!”

Our XPEL ULTIMATE film self-heals from light scratches, swirl marks and rock chips while driving or maintaining your vehicle. During the show we use a Brass wire brush to simulate the every day occurrences that can affect the film. With the sun on the display the scratches from the brush instantly disappear. When the sun is not available, you can accelerate the healing process with a cup of warm water or a heat source.
Not all Patterns are created equal
At XPEL we pride ourselves on our pre-cut pattern software. By using a pre-cut pattern you’ll have less to worry about, since the installer will not be trimming the film on your vehicle. Using a pre-cut pattern the film will naturally fit without excessive stretching or contortion, which means the finished product not only lines up perfectly but is free of defects which could be visible once the install is finished.
Contrary to what some may believe it’s possible to wrap edges using a computer cut pattern which gives you a much better protection and installation. With XPEL Technologies Corp., all patterns are available with precision cut wrapped edges where possible. Where a wrapped edge is not possible, for example around the parking sensors on a bumper, reverse cameras and more, the film is always machine cut with precision.
